Pappu Zebra Road Sense Campaign
Road safety is concerned with reducing the numbers and the consequences of accidents on the roads. “Safety for all” especially for our children going to schools and back is of prime importance to everyone. So, in order to achieve this objective our Forum launched “Pappu Zebra Road Sense Campaign” in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack cities in making the roads safer for the coming generations. It was a bottom-up approach for inculcating and developing a sense of responsibility about various aspects of road safety among the young children.
We developed a comic book “The Pappu Book of Road-Sense Stories” in Odia. The campaign is now engage members of the young generation in school level road safety education programme with Pappu Zebra as the “Theme Icon”. It is for the first time in Odisa that such an impactful community outreach programme was organised.
During the 22nd National Road Safety Week, Pappu the Road Sense Zebra was formally welcomed to Odisha by Sri B. K. Sharma, Police Commissioner, Bhubaneshwar-Cuttack at the DAV School, Chandrasekharpur. The event was witnessed by hundreds of cheering and excited school students. The launch event was attended by a range of popular Oriya film-stars including Anubhav Mohanty, Arindam Roy, Babushan, Aakash, Pintu Nanda, Sritam Das, Anu Choudhary and Ushasi Mishra, and sports personalities Dilip Tirkey and Anuradha Biswal. By means of the innovative Pappu Zebra campaign, our Forum seeks to impact schools and residential communities throughout the twin cities area on road safety matters. The Pappu Zebra Road Sense Campaign in Orissa is a joint programme of Forum for Prevention of Road Accidents, Orissa and Police Commisionerate, Bhubaneshwar-Cuttack, in association with OrgPEOPLE, Kerala.
